The Monster Lives, A Tropical Depression

Hello, everyone!

The Monster Lives! Well, I made it just under the wire…I do have a new Halloween soundscape this year, “The Monster Lives”. Just finished it, so though you are getting it prior to official release you’re only running a day or two ahead! Sorry ’bout that, but I’ve been very busy this fall and Halloween is coming up fast! “The Monster Lives” makes a good companion piece to last year’s “The Witching Time”. It’s six minutes of spooky ambience, punctuated by creepy beats. I used no “heartbeat” SFX, but rather selected and edited beats from my regular rhythm files to create the heartbeats. In addition to “The Monster Lives”, I have a special surprise for you, a brief spoken word piece which was a collaboration between me and Hockinfinger (aka Marty Keil) on My Virtual Band. It was featured on the October MVB Radio podcast (#9). Beginning with the “witching time” phrase, it serves as a good intro to last year’s “The Witching Time”. Marty added sound effects and did all the engineering and production work to excellent effect! (A note about rights: unlike my Gymshoes music, the piece I did with Marty is released under the Creative Commons”by” License, which means it can be put to more liberal use than my other material, which is for your private enjoyment only, see notice on the Download page.) Based on the enthusiastic response of people last year I have dusted off and slightly cleaned up “Ghost Mix”, the unreleased piece from two years ago, which you got a sneak peek of last year. It will be officially released as “Graveyard Ghosts” along with the newer pieces.

A Tropical Depression One of the reasons I’ve been so late in completing the Halloween music is that I’ve been sidetracked into writing new music inspired by the recent Gulf Coast hurricanes. I hope to have a few songs completed, polished and released by late spring next year. I’m giving myself plenty of time to write and record new material. At present I have one song complete, except the scratch vocals which aren’t up to scratch. 😉 as well as lyrics/melody for another as yet unrecorded. (I had to get back to “The Monster Lives”!) The EP, which may include the unreleased “Wave, Goodbye” is tentatively titled A Tropical Depression.

Fleeing Hurricane Rita

Hello, everyone!

If, last Wednesday night, September 21st, you saw on TV thousands of cars, brake lights glaring, inching through the darkness along Interstate 10, then you may have seen me. I was one of those exhausted, anxious, people trying desperately—and unsuccessfully—to get out of the city ahead of Hurricane Rita, looking for gas and finding none. We did not make it out, but the storm turned so I and my family were safe.

Ironically, I’m in the middle of a service project for survivors of Hurricane Katrina and was working on a new song about the evacuation of New Orleans, when I had to drop everything and evacuate myself! We stayed at a hotel with a lot of New Orleans evacuees. I realize how fortunate we were and will redouble my efforts on their behalf and also do whatever I can for friends and family who were hit by Hurricane Rita. You see, my family and my best friend lived in Beaumont. I grew up there. I have no great fondness for the city, but a lot of people I love evacuated ahead of the storm and may not have much to go back to.

I just wanted to let everyone know that “Gymshoes” is OK, home and dry.
